Homemade Strawberry Dragon Fruit Refresher Recipe

  • Author: Katherine

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 cup White Grape Juice: This forms the base of our refresher, providing a subtle sweetness and a light, fruity backdrop that complements the other flavors without overpowering them. Opt for 100% white grape juice for the best taste and avoid juices with added sugars if you want to control the sweetness level.
  • ½ cup Water: Water is crucial for diluting the juice and preventing the refresher from being overly sweet or syrupy. It also helps create the perfect consistency for a refreshing drink. You can adjust the amount of water slightly depending on your preference for a stronger or milder flavor.
  • ½ cup Brewed Green Tea, cooled: The green tea is a signature element of the Dunkin’ refresher, adding a subtle earthy note and a hint of caffeine for a gentle energy boost. Brew your green tea a bit stronger than you normally would to ensure the flavor comes through in the final drink. Let it cool completely before adding it to the mixture; otherwise, it might melt the ice and dilute the flavors too much. Using a good quality green tea will make a noticeable difference in the overall taste.
  • ½ cup Frozen Strawberries: Frozen strawberries are fantastic for this recipe for several reasons. First, they contribute to the icy, refreshing texture of the drink. Second, they eliminate the need for extra ice, preventing dilution of the flavors. Third, frozen fruit is often picked at peak ripeness and frozen immediately, preserving its flavor and nutrients. Plus, they’re readily available year-round!
  • ½ cup Dragon Fruit Puree (or Pitaya Puree): This is the star ingredient that gives the refresher its exotic twist and beautiful vibrant color. Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya, has a mild, slightly sweet flavor that is often described as a cross between kiwi and pear. You can find dragon fruit puree in the frozen fruit section of most grocery stores. Look for unsweetened puree to control the sweetness of your drink. If you can’t find puree, you can buy fresh or frozen dragon fruit and blend it yourself. For the best color and flavor, use red or pink dragon fruit puree.
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon Juice, freshly squeezed: Fresh lemon juice is essential for adding brightness and acidity to balance the sweetness of the juice and fruit. It enhances all the other flavors and prevents the drink from tasting flat. Freshly squeezed lemon juice is always preferred over bottled for its superior flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons Simple Syrup (or to taste): Simple syrup is a sugar-water mixture that dissolves easily into cold drinks, unlike granulated sugar. You can easily make simple syrup at home by combining equal parts water and sugar in a saucepan, heating until the sugar dissolves, and then cooling completely. Adjust the amount of simple syrup to your liking, depending on how sweet you prefer your refresher. You can also use other sweeteners like agave nectar or honey, but simple syrup provides a clean, neutral sweetness that works perfectly in this recipe.
  • Ice: While frozen strawberries help keep the drink cold, you’ll still need some ice to achieve that perfectly chilled, refreshing texture. Use good quality ice – filtered water ice will taste cleaner and won’t impart any off-flavors to your drink.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Green Tea: If you haven’t already, brew your green tea. Use about 1 green tea bag or 1 teaspoon of loose leaf green tea per cup of hot water. Let it steep for 3-5 minutes, or according to the package instructions. Once brewed, remove the tea bag or leaves and allow the tea to cool completely. This is crucial because adding hot tea to the blender will melt the frozen fruit and ice, resulting in a watery refresher. You can even brew the tea ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator to have it ready when you want to make your drink.
  2. Combine Ingredients in a Blender: This recipe is best made in a blender to achieve a smooth and frosty texture. Add the cooled green tea, white grape juice, water, frozen strawberries, dragon fruit puree, and fresh lemon juice to your blender. It’s generally best to add liquids first, followed by frozen ingredients, to help the blender work more efficiently.
  3. Sweeten to Taste: Start by adding 2 tablespoons of simple syrup to the blender. Taste the mixture and adjust the sweetness to your preference. If you prefer a sweeter drink, add more simple syrup, one tablespoon at a time, blending after each addition and tasting until you reach your desired level of sweetness. Remember that the sweetness of the dragon fruit and strawberries can vary, so tasting and adjusting is key to getting it just right.
  4. Blend Until Smooth: Securely place the lid on your blender and blend on high speed until all the ingredients are completely smooth and the frozen strawberries are fully incorporated. You should have a vibrant, pink, frosty mixture. Blend for about 30-60 seconds, or until you achieve a smooth, slushy consistency. If you find that the mixture is too thick, you can add a splash more water or white grape juice to thin it out slightly.
  5. Serve Immediately: Pour the Strawberry Dragon Fruit Refresher into a tall glass filled with ice. Garnish as desired (see “How to Serve” section below for serving suggestions). This drink is best enjoyed immediately while it’s still cold and frosty. If you let it sit for too long, the ice may melt, and the texture will become less desirable.
