Ingredients
For the Seasoned Burger Crumbles:
- 1.5 lbs Lean Ground Beef (85/15 or 90/10 works best to provide flavor without excessive grease)
- 1 tsp Smoked Paprika
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tsp Onion Powder
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
- 1/2 tsp Sea Salt
- 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil or Avocado Oil
For the Creamy “Special Sauce” Dressing:
- 1/2 cup Mayonnaise (use a high-quality, full-fat version for the best flavor and texture)
- 1/4 cup Ketchup (or sugar-free ketchup for a low-carb option)
- 2 tbsp Finely Diced Dill Pickles or Sweet Relish
- 1 tbsp Dijon Mustard
- 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
- A pinch of Cayenne Pepper (optional, for a little heat)
- 1–2 tbsp Water or Milk (to thin to desired consistency)
For the Salad Assembly:
- 1 large head of Romaine Lettuce (about 8–10 cups, washed, dried, and chopped)
- 1 cup Cherry or Grape Tomatoes, halved
- 1 large Avocado, pitted, peeled, and diced
- 4 Hard-Boiled Eggs, peeled and quartered or sliced
- 8 slices of Bacon, cooked until crisp and crumbled
- 1 cup Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
- 1/2 cup finely sliced Red Onion
- 1/2 cup Dill Pickle Slices, chopped
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Creamy Special Sauce Dressing
In a medium-sized bowl or a glass jar with a lid, combine all the dressing ingredients: mayonnaise, ketchup, diced pickles or relish, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, and the optional cayenne pepper. Whisk vigorously until the mixture is smooth and fully combined. The consistency should be pourable but still creamy. If it’s too thick, add a tablespoon of water or milk at a time until you reach your desired consistency. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Cover and refrigerate the dressing while you prepare the rest of the salad. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully.
Step 2: Cook the Bacon and Hard-Boiled Eggs
For the Bacon: You can cook the bacon using your preferred method.
- Stovetop: Place slices in a cold skillet and cook over medium heat, flipping occasionally, until crispy. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess grease.
- Oven: Lay slices on a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment paper. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until it reaches your desired crispness.
Once cooled, crumble the bacon into bite-sized pieces.
For the Hard-Boiled Eggs: Place eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water by about an inch. Bring the water to a rolling boil. Once boiling, turn off the heat, cover the pot, and let the eggs sit for 10-12 minutes. Immediately transfer the eggs to an ice bath to stop the cooking process and make them easier to peel. Once cooled, peel and quarter them.
Step 3: Cook the Seasoned Burger Crumbles
Heat the olive oil or avocado oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef to the hot pan. Use a spatula or wooden spoon to break the meat apart as it cooks.
Once the beef starts to brown, add the Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, sea salt, and black pepper. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the beef is fully browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes.
If you used 85/15 ground beef, there might be some excess grease. Carefully drain it from the skillet. Set the seasoned beef crumbles aside to cool slightly.
Step 4: Prepare the Salad Vegetables
While the beef is cooking, prepare all your fresh salad components.
- Wash, thoroughly dry, and chop the romaine lettuce into bite-sized pieces. A salad spinner is highly recommended to ensure the lettuce is dry, which helps the dressing adhere better.
- Halve the cherry or grape tomatoes.
- Finely slice the red onion.
- Chop the dill pickle slices.
- Dice the avocado. It’s best to do this just before serving to prevent it from browning. You can toss it with a little lemon or lime juice to help preserve its color.
Step 5: Assemble the Ultimate Burger Cobb Salad
Assembly is where the magic happens. You have two primary options:
- For a Large Platter (Family Style): Spread the chopped romaine lettuce evenly over a large serving platter to create a base. Arrange the other ingredients in distinct, neat rows on top of the lettuce. A classic Cobb presentation would be rows of seasoned beef crumbles, crumbled bacon, quartered eggs, halved tomatoes, diced avocado, shredded cheddar, and sliced red onions. Sprinkle the chopped pickles over the top.
- For Individual Bowls: Divide the chopped romaine among four large bowls. Top each bowl with an equal portion of the burger crumbles, bacon, egg, tomatoes, avocado, cheese, red onion, and pickles. This method ensures everyone gets a perfect distribution of toppings.
